Background of Comoros
Comoros is a small group of islands north of Madagascar. The country's landscape is beautiful, but poverty and political tension makes this an undesirable tourist destination. The islands were under Arab control until 1880 when it was put under the protection of France. In 1912 Comoros became a french colony but gained independence only 63 years later. Although the country is independent, it still has an ongoing struggle for power.
Current Affairs
Comoros is a very beautiful country with very ugly politics. Comoros has experienced more than 20 violent and illegal seizures of governmental power since 1975 (right after its break from France). The county is democratic and the presidency of the nations rotates between the three islands. Ikililou Dhoininene was voted president of Comoros in May 2011. He vows to stop the corruption in the government and to delve out justice to everyone, even the rich and powerful. The country also hopes to improve its economic situation. The country has very few natural resources so they rely heavily on foreign aid. Comoros exports vanilla, cloves and perfume essence.
